    During a long time, the demographic history of USSR has been unknown or ill-known. The lack of sources was one of the major reason of this. However, the opening of the archives in the last years leads to the possibility of a reconstruction of this history. These archives contain indeed census or other demographic sources, which have been hidden by soviet officials in the past. This history is strongly linked with the political history of the USSR. Demographic break-up, demographic catastrophes in the twenties and the thirties follow the political strong changes. However, the long term trends appear to be almost independent of these break-up. This article follows thèse two contradictory trends.

    Longtemps restée sous forme d'interrogation devant l'insuffisance des sources, l'histoire démographique de l'URSS se révèle peu à peu. L'ouverture des archives rend maintenant l'accès possible aux diverses sources, censitaires ou d'état civil, que le pouvoir soviétique avait préféré laisser enfermées à l'abri des regards. Cette histoire est en étroite symbiose avec l'histoire politique, les mouvements démographiques de court terme, jalonnés par des catastrophes de 1917 à 1930 suivent les grandes ruptures politiques. En revanche, les évolutions de long terme révèlent des mouvements imperturbables, qui ne sont qu'interrompus temporairement par ces drames. Cet article suit donc ces grandes tendances contradictoires.
