Textile historicity in films on the Middle Ages.
From its earliest days the cinema has always taken an interest in the Middle Ages and, alongside sets and scenes, textiles play an important part in its efforts to reconstruct the past. The quest for historicity through dress has had its ups and dawns, firstly because the profession of costume designer was slow to develop and then because the sources available to draw on were incomplete. The influence of contemporary fashion is always another obstacle, since the public expect clothing in a film on the Middle Ages to reflect both past and present. Although collaboration is more frequent between the film world and historians, it does not rule out visual historicity.
