    El uso de joyas protectoras es una práctica inmemorial. Durante el Renacimiento y Barroco también era una costumbre frecuente, como lo demuestran tanto los textos literarios como la pintura. El objetivo de este trabajo es probar que, por lo que se refiere a España, aunque existen unas ciertas diferencias y matices entre los siglos xvi y xvii en la valoración de la ciencia, aunque durante estos siglos las fronteras entre fe, magia y superstición son muy tenues, aunque la Iglesia oscile entre permitir la investigación y cercenarla, las joyas, como objeto de protección ante el dolor, la enfermedad y la muerte, subsistirán, y la prueba está en que sus poseedores no dudarán en posar para la eternidad adornados con estas alhajas.

    Using protective jewels has been an immemorial practice. It was also an habitual practice during the Renaissance and the Baroque period as it can be seen both in literature and art. The aim of this essay is to prove that in Spain, while there are some differences and nuances between sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the boundaries between faith, magic an superstition in these centuries are blurred, and while the Catholic Church fluctuates between permitting and slitting research, jewels as protective objects against pain, disease and death will survive, which is demonstrated by the fact that their owners do not hesitate to pose for the eternity wearing them.
