El cocodrilo en la región Maya Yokot'an: Un acercamiento antropológico a la actualidad del ambiente en Tabasco

    En el marco de los estudios sobre la identidad resulta interesante un acercamiento a la importancia que el ambiente –y todo lo que integra el complejo– ha tenido a través del tiempo. El presente trabajo es un acercamiento al estudio de la importancia del cocodrilo en el mundo maya. Se exponen, por ejemplo, las funciones que dicho animal desempeñó como parte del medio geográfico en la producción identitaria. Se observan varios usos de los que fue objeto: como parte del paisaje sagrado, su estrecha relación con algunos dioses o seres sagrados, es decir, en el ámbito meramente religioso; y también su uso en la alimentación y “remedios” para ciertos padecimientos o enfermedades. Lo interesante de realizar un estudio partiendo de un elemento concreto, el cocodrilo, es que encontramos información desde la época prehispánica hasta la actualidad (fuentes arqueológicas, códices, fuentes coloniales, fuentes etnográficas).

    In the framework of the studies about identity it is worth taking into account the importance of the natural environment and its role through the time. The present work is the study of the role of the crocodile in the Mayan world. The study was carried out by observing how the people have used crocodile e.g. the functions of this animal are analyzed, as a part of the geographical environment in order to create the identity, as a part of the sacred landscape, and its relationship with some gods or sacred beings. On the other hand, its use in the feeding and remedies for certain ailment or illnesses is analyzed. This kind of study, in which the crocodile is considered as a concrete element, has a special aspect of interest, because it is possible to find information from the pre-Hispanic until the present time based on either archaeological sources, pictorial manuscripts or colonial and ethnographic sources.
