    Feline hyperthyroidism and canine hypothyroidism are two relatively common endocrine disorders. The diagnostic criteria are based on history, clinical examination, and the results of haematological and biochemical blood tests and hormonal assays. However, there are pitfalls to avoid. A thyroid disorder cannot be definitely ruled out if the thyroid region is normal on palpation or the concentration of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) are within normal range. the clinician is able to establish a diagnosis using a complete list of anomalities, that is, those previously found together with medical imaging techniques (ultrasonography, CT scan, scintigraphy). thyroid scintigraphy is the only imaging technique that provides information on the functioal state of the organ and it is the complementary examination of choice in exploring the various thyroid disorders in dogs and cats, and their treatment.

    L'hyperthyroidie féline et l'hypothyroïdie canine sont deux affections endocriniennes relativement fréquentes. Les critères diagnostiques sont fondés sur l'anamnèse, l'examen clinique, les résultats d'analyses sanguines hématologique et biochimique, et les dosages hormonaux. Cependant, certains pièges sont à éviter: une palpation normale de la région thyroïdienne ou une concentration normale en hormones thyroïdiennes (T3 et T4) ne permettent pas d'exclure définitivement une affection thyroïdienne. L'imagerie médicale (échographie, scanner, scitingraphie) va compléter la liste des anomalies préalablement répertoriées pour aider le clinicien à établir son diagnostic. La scintigraphie thyroïdienne est la seule technique d'imagerie qui apporte des informations sur l'état fonctionnel de cet organe: elle est donc un examen complémentaire de choix dans l'exploration des différentes affections thyroïdiennes chez le chien et le chat et dans la mise en place de leur traitement.
