  Una de las mayores preocupaciones de la Iglesia, al igual que de la Corona, fue el hecho de que todos los esfuerzos no habían bastado para acabar con la "idolatría". Durán, Landa, Mendieta, Sahagún y otros se quejan amargamente al respecto, al igual que Acosta y Arriaga desde el Perú. A mediados del siglo XVII religiosos como De la Serna y Balsalobre informan que poco había cambiado y los indios seguían con las antiguas prácticas de sus antepasados. La mayoría de los religiosos estaban de acuerdo en que el único medio era proceder con mano dura, y aquí se examina el papel del castigo, los autos de fe y la Inquisición. La obra de Sánchez de Aguilar es una excelente fuente para informarnos respecto a la extirpación de la "idolatría", como también sobre la disputa referente al derecho exclusivo del brazo eclesiástico para juzgarla y castigarla. En sus diez fundamentos y dos conclusiones Sánchez de Aguilar pondera y justifica este derecho y termina proponiendo 16 remedios para acabar con la "idolatría".

  One of the main concerns of Church and State alike was the fact that all their efforts had not been enough to extirpate "idolatry". Durán, Landa, Mendieta, Sahagún and others complain bitterly about this, as well as Acosta and Arriaga from Peru. In the mid 1560's religious like De la Serna and Balsalobre state that little had changed and that the Indians continued with the ancient practices of their forefathers. The majority of the religious shared the idea that the only remedy was to use a hard-handed approach, and here we examine the role of punishment, the autos de fe and the Inquisition. The work of Sánchez de Aguilar is an excellent source of information regarding the extirpation of "idolatry", as well as the bitter dispute regarding the exclusive right of the bishop to judge and punish idolatry. In his ten fundamentos and two conclusions the author examines and justifies this right and finishes by proposing sixteen remedies for putting an end to "idolatry".
