    La glándula tiroides es una glándula neuroendocrina, situada justo debajo de la nuez de Adán, junto al cartílago tiroides sobre la tráquea... Regula el metabolismo del cuerpo, produ- ce proteínas y regula la sensibilidad del cuerpo a otras hormonas. Participa en la producción de hormonas, especial- mente tiroxina (T4) y triyodotironina (T3). También puede producir (T3) inversa,que regulan el metabolismo basal y afectan el crecimiento y grado de funcionalidad de otros sistemas del organismo, así como organogénesis del SNC. El yodo es un componente esencial tanto para T3 como para T4.

    Es controlada por el hipotálamo y la glándula pituitaria.

    La asociación de cuadros psiquiátricos de depresión con las alteraciones tiroideas y con el llamado hipotiroidismo subclí- nico es cada vez más común entre los PSIQUIATRAS Y ENDOCRINÓLOGOS
