    The role of cities is central in the history of European integration. The development of Europe is, in no small measure, the development of its cities:

    cities that have been the focus of the processes of modernization and construction of a common identity. Cities that are now called upon to again play a central role in the more recent perspective of “sustainable development” and in the context of the transformation dynamics affecting all the major urban centers. The new European policy, focusing on cities and the metropolitan areas, is linked to the development of a new idea of “city of the future”, qualified through the documents that have defined the “urban acquis”. What emerges is an idea of smart cities (cities inclusive, sustainable, factor of development of the territories), which is supported by European policies. The numerous sectoral lines of action and financing related to the city are gradually integrated into an overall “European Urban Agenda” approach. An Agenda, nearing completion, reflected on the specific “urban agenda” that many Italian cities have the opportunity, and the challenge, to develop within the framework of the new season of European funding.

    Lo sviluppo urbano è al centro della storia stessa della costruzione europea.

    Lo sviluppo dell’Europa è, in misura non secondaria, lo sviluppo delle sue città, che dei processi di modernizzazione ed integrazione sono state il fulcro nella storia europea. Città che sono ora chiamate a svolgere nuovamente un ruolo centrale, nella più recente prospettiva dello “sviluppo sostenibile”.

    Le nuove politiche europee, rivolte alle città ed ai contesti metropolitani, si legano all’elaborazione, recente, di una nuova idea di città “del futuro”, qualificata attraverso i documenti che hanno definito l’acquis urbano comunitario.

    Ne emerge un’idea di città intelligente, inclusiva, sostenibile, motore di sviluppo dei territori, che è sostenuta dalle politiche europee. Le numerose linee di azione settoriali che hanno investito, e continuano ad investire, le città si integrano quindi, progressivamente, in un approccio organico di “Agenda urbana europea”. Un’Agenda europea, in via di completamento, che a sua volta si riflette sulle “agende urbane” che numerose città hanno l’opportunità, e la sfida, di sviluppare nel quadro della nuova stagione di finanziamenti europei.
