    • [Sherry Vargson]'s'show and tell' hit headlines, as others had before her, and all but a handful of these reports blamed nearby gas exploration -'fracking' - for the flaming faucet.

Whether or not fracking is to blame for such incidents has been the subject of many academic studies - one released this April - and reports by analysts. Merely saying that these reports have not proven conclusively that fracking caused the dancing flames does not do the academics and reporters justice, but there it is: it hasn't been conclusively proven.

Changing people's perceptions on the shale gas industry is difficult however. Once over one million people have seen flaming taps they are not going to unsee it. Films like Gasland (where the flaming tap phenomenon first gained attention) and this year's Promised Land have promoted the idea that fracking is unsafe, environmentally unsound and expensive.
