  • Using this month's problem, students will engage in a task that has a low threshold, allowing all students to get a foothold in the work. The task also has a high ceiling with plenty of challenges to push students' thinking deeper. According to the Mathematics Teaching Practices outlined in NCTM's Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All (2014), "implementing tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving" involves engaging students in tasks that support multiple entry points and varied solution strategies. These kinds of tasks allow students to experience an appropriate level of challenge without getting overwhelmed.
