Resumen de Genetic commons and codified commodities: exploring the role of intellectual property rights on genetic resources in Norwegian biotechnology innovation systems

E. Stien Grimsrud, B. Aarset, A. Myhr, V. Skagemo, I. Olesen

  • Exploitation of the extensive Norwegian marine resources has entered the era of modern biotechnology. The sources of knowledge of both bioprospecting and aquaculture are often genetic resources, considered to be common or public goods. Here, a selection of views on intellectual property rights and access regulation in certain areas of aquaculture and marine bioprospecting will be presented. With the aim to tailor intellectual property rights systems for genetic resources, we will argue that their specific biological features and implications as well as ability to promote good cooperation between industry and research institutions should be considered.
