El artículo presenta una breve reseña de la historia monetaria argentina desde el período colonial hasta la década de 1870. Se aborda la economía colonial, la etapa de transición y el período de organización nacional. En ellas se identifican las instituciones emisoras y se analiza la evolución monetaria describiendo los conflictos y las crisis atravesadas, así como también sus efectos sobre la moneda nacional. Se enfatiza el papel del desempeño fiscal en el valor de la moneda y la puja de intereses en torno a su alteración.

The article presents a brief overview of the Argentina monetary history from the colonial period until the 1870s. The colonial economy is approached, the transition and the period of national organization. The issuing institutions are identified and monetary developments are analyzed describing conflicts and crises, as well as their effects on the national currency. The role of fiscal performance in the value of the currency and interest bid around its alteration is emphasized.
