‘Do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation’ (DNACPR) decisions have received a significant amount of attention, in part because of a highly publicized judgement from the Court of Appeal for England and Wales. Updated guidance from professional bodies and a public consultation on the English Emergency Care and Treatment Plan have sparked further debate.
This article summarizes some of the key points for clinicians when making DNACPR decisions, including when and how DNACPR discussions should take place. It also suggests examples and methods for how to approach conversations with patients and proxies.
