Resumen de Inserindo o Inesperado: Uma Investigação Sintático-Semântica de Actually e In Fact em um Corpus de Inglês Contemporâneo

  Actually and in fact have been generally regarded as equivalent and interchangeable without leading to any significant differences in the meaning of the containing utterances: as a result, not many attempts have been made to discover potential differences between the two. The present study investigates the differences as well as the similarities between actually and in fact in their distribution and use in two corpora of American English. Based upon an analysis of tokens from the Freiburg-Brown Corpus of American English (FROWN) and from the Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English (MICASE), the article proposes that “unexpectedness” is the core meaning shared by actually and in fact, and that the difference between the two lies in the typical association of each with the various ways of signaling “unexpectedness”. The study also shows that in real discoursive contexts actually and in fact develop a number of different uses that are peripheral to core meaning.

  Actually e in fact são geralmente considerados equivalentes, podendo ser substituíveis um pelo outro sem que haja diferenças marcantes nos significados das sentenças: como resultado, poucos estudos foram realizados para descobrir possíveis diferenças entre estes dois itens lingüísticos. Este artigo procura investigar as diferenças e semelhanças entre actually e in fact e suas distribuições e usos em dois corpora de inglês americano. Com base na análise de exemplos extraídos do Freiburg-Brown Corpus of American English (FROWN) e do Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English (MICASE), o artigo propõe que o sentido prototípico compartilhado por actually e in fact está associado a algo “inesperado” e que a diferença entre os dois reside na associação típica de cada um com as várias maneiras de inserir algo “inesperado” em uma oração. O estudo também demonstra que em contextos discursivos reais, actually e in fact apresentam uma série de diferentes usos que são periféricos ao seu uso prototípico.
