Resumen de Nuovi materiali per la miniatura teramana del Trecento. Il progetto illustrativo delle "Decretali" di Monaco

Lola Massolo

  • New materials for the 14th-century illumination in Teramo: the illustrative project of the Munich "Decretales".

This article aims to investigate an illuminated legal manuscript from the workshop of Muzio di Francesco di Cambio da Teramo (Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 21505), both from a stylistic and an iconographic point of view.

By analyzing the differences in the style of its illuminations, in comparison to those of the well-known "Biblia Aprutina" signed by Muzio, and by examining its illustrative proyect, it has been possible to trace a clearer outline of the unusual and interesting book production made for study purposes in the town of Teramo. The originality of the manuscript's iconographies shows that its illuminator elaborated a project independent from the more elaborate models illuminated in the main university centres across Europe.

The outline of a lively cultural context and of a much wider production than hitherto known is further documented through the discussion of a group of related manuscripts, some of which never analyzed before.

This rich and to some extent unexpected context is finally connected with the well-known monumental patronage of the bishop Niccolò degli Arcioni (1317-1355), who must be considered responsible, together with the different Orders present in the city, of the flourishing of the artistic production in the mid 14th-century Teramo.
