Resumen de Os institutos históricos e geográficos e alguns discursos sobre os negros na história da nação

The main aim of this article is to convey a number of observations on how, at the end of the 19th century and in the early decades of the 20th century, the IHGB (The Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute) and the Teaching of History were responsible for shaping and crystallizing various concepts, ideas, values and behaviours regarding black people through a modern process of formulating attitudes. In the cities undergoing modernization, negative concepts and images concerning black people were created by academics, and their intellectual spheres, pertaining principally to a specific kind of literature, to the historiography and to the teachers. This built up a feeling of nationalism and a history, conceived as national memory, in which the cultural heritage of the black population was erased.

O objetivo principal deste artigo é trazer algumas reflexões sobre como, no final do século XIX e nas primeiras décadas do século XX, o IHGB e o Ensino de História foram responsáveis por moldar e cristalizar alguns conceitos, ideias, valores e comportamentos em relação aos negros dentro de um processo moderno de construção das sensibilidades. Nas cidades que estavam se modernizando, as ideias e imagens negativas sobre os negros foram construídas pelos intelectuais e seus espaços de saber, cabendo, sobretudo, à determinada literatura, à historiografia e aos professores, construírem um sentimento de nação e uma história concebida como memória nacional na qual a herança civilizatória do negro é apagada.
