Resumen de Por uma história transnacional dos festivais de música popular: Música, contracultura e transferências culturais nas décadas de 1960 e 1970

As generational landmarks and truly memorable places, Pop Music Festivals had a crucial impact on the making of a transnational music culture during the second half of the twentieth century. Dedicated to jazz, songwriters, rock, pop or folk music, festivals attracted a wide variety of people and were covered by the media as never before, which promoted an immense exchange of cultural diversity. In Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in Vina del Mar and Mexico City, in Dakar and on the Isle of Wight, in Monterrey, Montreux and Juan-LesPins, festivals consecrated new musical icons and played a part in the formation of a new “youth culture” breaking away from the established order. This article explores the genesis and the evolution of pop music festivals in the Western world during the sixties and the seventies and discusses three major issues: 1) the invention of a “festival form” distinct from the traditional practices of recital and concert; 2) the economic, political and diplomatic dimensions of festivals as international meetings; 3) the cultural transfers and appropriations which occurred during those musical events.

Marcadores geracionais e verdadeiros lugares de memória, os festivais de música popular tiveram um papel de destaque na criação de uma cultura musical transnacional durante a segunda metade do século XX. Dedicados ao jazz, à canção, ao rock ou às músicas pop, esses encontros reuniram um vasto público, se beneficiaram de uma midiatização inédita e favoreceram as transferências culturais entre diversas áreas culturais. Em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro, em Viña del Mar e na cidade do México, em Dacar e na ilha de Wight, em Monterrey, Montreux e Juan-les-Pins, os festivais consagraram novos ícones musicais e definiram um lugar para a formação de uma cultura jovem, em ruptura com a ordem estabelecida, para a qual a música constituiu um elemento federativo no nível internacional. Focada no período imediatamente anterior à descoberta da world music pelo público ocidental, a pesquisa pretende retraçar a gênese e a evolução dos festivais de música popular a partir de três eixos problemáticos: 1) a invenção de uma “forma festival” distinta das práticas tradicionais do recital e do concerto; 2) a dimensão econômica, política e estratégica desses encontros internacionais; 3) as transferências culturais e apropriações musicais permitidas por tais manifestações.
