Documents located during research in the notarial archives at Mantua, Italy, provide a substantial amount of information about Count Baldassarre Castiglione's book collection and other possessions. Despite his historical and literary fame, Baldassarre still demands historical investigation. The first document, dated March 11, 1499, contains the inventory of Cristoforo Castiglione, Baldassarre's father. The second document, recorded in 1529, is the inventory of Baldassarre Castiglione's own goods. A further inventory, from 1530, relates to goods that had been brought back from Spain to Mantua. Information in the documents includes lists of books in Castiglione's library, which confirms that his interests were mainly devoted to classical Latin and Greek works; an inventory of jewels and precious artifacts, including a gold collar given to Castiglione in 1506 by King Henry VII in London; and works of art in his collection. Lists of items recorded in the documents are reproduced.
