  • Resumen
    • The writer suggests an alternative interpretation of how the figures and names painted by Michelangelo in the lunettes of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Rome, may be related. Although the locus classicus for interpretations that make strict connections between the figures and names is Charles de Tolnay's account for the lunettes as “the sphere of shadow and death,” this analysis has generally suffered since cleaning in the 1980s revealed the rich range of colors in this part of the chapel. The writer proposes that the names do not act primarily as strict indicators of individuals, but, in the Genealogy of Christ, are terms in a chain from Abraham to Jesus. She concludes that all the names must be taken together to denote the Ancestors of Christ.
