Aunque no fuera la primera de las asociaciones españolas, la Real sociedad Fotográfica de Madrid es considerada la decana de todas las demás, pues fue la única que cristalizó como proyecto estable, y tuvo un enorme impacto en las dos primeras décadas de s. xx, gracias sobre todo a la revista La Fotografía, editada sin interrupción entre 1901 y 1914. Por la precariedad de la industria fotográfica española profesional, esta revista y otras similares que la imitaron se convirtieron en la única cátedra de discusión sobre fotografía que encontraban los aficionados y profesionales en la primera mitad del s. xx.
Las luces y sombras de la fotografía en la Real son también las del contradictorio arte español del período de Vanguardia, pero el complejo debate que se genera en los comienzos de la Real Sociedad fotográfica de Madrid es digno de estudio, pues llega hasta nuestros días.

Despite not being the first of these associations in Spain, the Royal Photographic society of Madrid is considered the most pre-eminent, because it was the only one that stabilized as a manageable project, and it had an enormous impact during the two first decades of photography in the 20th century, thanks mainly to the magazine «La Fotografía», that was edited between 1901 and 1914. Due to the fact that the Photographic industry in Spain was precarious at that time, this magazine and other similar magazines became the only place of discussion and exchange on Photography and the art of Photography in which professionals and amateurs shared ideas during the first half of the 20th century. The good and bad points of photography in the Royal Society reflect the contradictions in Spanish vanguard art, but the complex debate that started during the formation of the Royal Photographic Society of Madrid is worthy of study, because the debate continues even in our days.
