Melissa Meriam Bullard, Nicolai Rubinstein
The writer reassesses the circumstances of Lorenzo de' Medici's acquisition of a Roman cornelian of Apollo, Marsyas, and Olympos. Until now, it was commonly believed that Lorenzo purchased the gem in Rome, but the reference to ͺl Suggello di Nerone” seen in the inventory of objects confiscated from the Medici after their expulsion from Florence has now been compared with a similar reference eight years earlier in October 1487 in Lorenzo's correspondence. This now makes it possible to establish that the gem was in fact purchased in Venice in 1487.
