Early 17th-century sculptor and master mason, Nicholas Stone, may have had a more enduring influence on the design of flat-topped box tombs, than on the English tradition of portrait sculpture. It has been shown that his monuments in Westminster Abbey were frequently specified as models in early 17th-century wills in which testators provided for their own tombs, and in contracts for work to be undertaken. It is also known that Stone's work in particular was copied and was the starting point for new departures in taste, such as the trend towards standing effigies. The writer examines a number of tombs in detail.
