Legislation on waste belongs to the most differentiated areas in EU environmental law. It presents also a certain technical character. However, there is a basic "philosophy" of waste legislation (which is of crucial importance for the content, the structure and the interpretation of waste law) and one may identify some central questions (such as the concept of waste, the general duties concerning waste management or the polluter pays-principle) which are relevant for the whole sector of waste law. The aim of this contribution is precisely to give an overview of the fundamental structure of EU wate law and to analyze some selected issues which are of general interest. Finally, the implications of EU waste law for Switzerland as a Non EU member State will be pointed out.
