George F. Jones had shared with his friend Ulrich Müller the distinction of publishing groundbreaking research on Oswald von Wolkenstein. They both recognized the promise of Albrecht Classen, who had wanted to do graduate work with Professor Jones. But Jones, nearing retirement, suggested that Albrecht pursue doctoral studies with me at the University of Virginia. The rest, as the commonplace goes, is “history.” Not only did Albrecht Classen write a fine dissertation, he published it with Müller as an important book. Thus the mantle passed to Albrecht and remained firmly around his shoulders
