  Es intención de esta investigación ofrecer al lector interesado aspectos de este importante personaje que arriesgó su vida y bienes, al evitar la desmembración de la Corona española en septiembre de 1808, cuando capitaneó el primer golpe de Estado en la historia del continente americano que llevó a la destitución y detención del virrey de la Nueva España José de Iturrigaray. Nadie como Gabriel de Yermo —hombre ilustrado, avanzado en lo económico y social— representa el conflicto político surgido durante ese verano entre los intereses de los ricos españoles europeos y las ilusiones criollas que ansiaban un futuro independiente. Dos años después de la detención y traslado a la península de Iturrigaray, Yermo volvería a demostrar su inquebrantable fidelidad poniendo a disposición del virrey Venegas sus propias tropas conocidas como «los lanceros de Yermo» que se batieron con honor en la decisiva batalla de Las Cruces. Sirva este artículo como homenaje a este patriota del que se cumple en 2013 el bicentenario de su fallecimiento.

  This research is willing to provide to the reader who is interested in the aspects of this important character who risked his life and properties, to prevent the dismemberment of the Spanish Crown in September 1808, when he captained the first coup d’etat in the History of the American continent leading to the dismissal and arrest of the viceroy of New Spain José de Iturrigaray. Nobody like Gabriel de Yermo —illustrated man, advanced in economic and social aspects— depict the conflict that emerged during the summer between the interests of the rich European people from Spain and the hopes of the creoles who long for an independent future. Two years after the arrest and transfer to the Peninsula of Iturrigaray, Yermo would go back to demonstrate their unwavering loyalty by providing to the Viceroy Venegas their own troops known as «Yermo’s Lancers» who fought with honor in the decisive Battle of Las Cruces. Serve this article as a tribute to the patriot who met in 2013 the bicentennial of his death.
