    Up until today, the banishment of the poet Ovid by Emperor Augustus has remained a blank space in Roman history. In Christoph Ransmayr’s novel “The Last World”, this event is represented as a biopolitical primal scene which reveals the paradoxical structure of political sovereignty. This article presents Ransmayr’s novel in the context of recent philosophical and legal discussions on the state of emergency as the paradigm of modern politics, and it demonstrates that “The Last World” itself remains – as a literary text – under the spell of the signifier Rome.

    Die Verbannung des Dichters Ovid durch Kaiser Augustus ist bis heute eine Leerstelle der römischen Geschichtsschreibung. In Christoph Ransmayrs „Die letzte Welt“ wird dieses Ereignis als biopolitische Urszene dargestellt, an dem das paradoxe Wesen politischer Souveränität zum Vorschein kommt. Der Beitrag stellt Ransmayrs Roman in den Kontext jüngerer philosophischer und juristischer Diskussionen zum Ausnahmezustand als Paradigma der modernen Politik und zeigt auf, inwiefern „Die letzte Welt“ als literarischer Text noch selbst im Banne des Signifikanten Rom steht
