El servicio de ayuda a domicilio adquirió, con el paso del tiempo un gran relieve, llegando a ser considerado el “servicio estrella”, cumpliendo unos objetivos altamente preferidos por el colectivo de personas dependientes. Factores demográficos, sociales y de política social contribuyeron de forma decisoria a su impulso. Su equipo interdisciplinar garantizaba una atención integral y polivalente, contando con figuras relevantes como la del Trabajador Social y el Auxiliar de Ayuda a Domicilio.
El momento de crisis en el que se desarrolla la LAAD ha sometido el servicio a continuos ajustes y modificaciones en su intensidad, lo que resulta paradójico si tenemos en cuenta que se ha incrementado tanto el número de personas como sus necesidades de atención. El protagonismo del Servicio de Ayuda a domicilio se ve fuertemente amenazado en la actualidad, ya que se está pudiendo verificar que su coste es más elevado que el residencial y que resulta poco eficaz sin un apoyo complementario ya sea, mediante apoyo familiar, o un Centro de día. Son todas ellas cuestiones que han sido objeto de un desarrollo en mayor profundidad.

Home help service became quite important over the years, so that it was considered a “star service”, and it achieved some objectives which were highly popular in the group of dependent persons. Demographic and social factors as well as social politics contributed to boosting it in a decisive way. Its interdisciplinary team guaranteed an integral and polyvalent attention and counted on major figures like that of the social worker and the home help assistant.
The moment of crisis when the LAAD (Law on Home Help) is being developed has submitted this service to continuous adjustments and modifications in its intensity; which is paradoxical if we take into account that the number of persons and their needs for attention have increased. The prominence of home help service is being strongly threatened at present, as we can ascertain that its cost is higher that a residence and that it is rather ineffective without a back-up support, whether from the family or from a day centre. All of these are issues that have been the object of a deeper development.
