La nouvelle Allemagne: quels symboles ?

    Symbols of the New Germany German identity, which has been subject to constant controversy throughout a history marked by disconti-nuity, has a new chance to be constituted thanks to the reunification of the two German states created in 1949. Among the symbols that express this identity, the Brandeburg Gate, which was reopened after the fall of the Berlin Wall, although highly symbolic, cannot be adopted because it suggests the process of liberation rather than national values. The same is true of the German colours, black, red and gold, which refer back to a democratie tradition, that of 1848, which is far from lively. As for the deutschmark, it is a real symbol, given the Germans' sense of being a major economie power, but it is not a very presentable one. The Constitution, which is now the embodiment of an ideal political community, possesses no tangible symbolic expression. The question is whether the weak identification with the nation-state, which is perceptible through the lack of strong symbols, is the sign of a new post-national identity, or whether this vacuum is liable to be filled by less manageable rites of identity.

    Les symboles de la nouvelle Allemagne L'identité allemande qui n'a cessé d'être contrariée au cours d'une histoire marquée par la discontinuité trouve, avec la réunification des deux Etats allemands créés en 1949, une nouvelle chance de pouvoir se constituer. Parmi les symboles qui pourraient l'exprimer, la Porte de Brandebourg, ouverte après la chute du Mur, bien que dotée d'une portée symbolique très forte, ne peut être retenue dans la mesure où, plus que des valeurs nationales, elle évoque le processus de libération ; il en est de même des couleurs allemandes, noir-rouge-or, qui renvoient à une tradition démocratique, celle de 1848, guère présente. Quant au deutschmark, c'est un symbole réel étant donné le sentiment qu'ont les Allemands d'appartenir à une grande puissance économique, mais peu avouable. La Constitution, incarnation désormais de l'idée d'une communauté politique idéale, ne dispose pas d'une expression symbolique tangible. On peut se demander dès lors si la faible identification avec l'Etat-nation, sensible à travers l'absence de symboles forts, n'est pas l'indice d'un nouveau type d'identité post-nationale ou bien si ce vide ne risque pas d'être compensé par des rites identitaires moins contrôlables.

    Die Symbole des Neuen Deutschland Die Identität Deutschlands war wegen der äufëerst diskontinuierlichen Geschichte des Landes schon immer in sich problematisch. Mit der Bildung von zwei deutschen Staaten im Jahre 1949 wurde ein provisorischer Zustand geschaffen, der erst 1990 durch die deutsche Einigung überwunden Wurde. Durch welche Symbole äußert sich die Identität des Neuen Deutschland ? Der Fall der Mauer und die öffnung des Brandenburger Tores haben eine starke symbolische Tragweite, aber sie verkörpem mehr den Prozeß der Befreiung als nationale Werte. Die deutschen Farben - schwarz-rot-gold - verweisen auf die demokratische Tradition von 1848 ; aber diese Bedeutung ist kaum gegenwärtig. Wenn das Gefühl, eine wichtige Wirtschaftsmacht zu sein, einen Kern des deutschen politischen Bewußtseins darstellt, so ist die D-Mark dafür ein reales Symbol, zu dem man sich aber kaum zu bekennen traut. Die Verfassung ist in Deutschland zur Verkörperung der Idee eines idealen politischen Gemeinwesens geworden ; sie verfügt aber nicht über einen greifbaren symbolischen Ausdruck. Man kann sich fragen, ob die schwache Identifizierung mit dem Nationalstaat, die sich im Fehlen aussagekräftiger Symbole äußert, Indiz einer neuen post-nationalen Identität ist oder ob dieses Vakuum eines Tages durch weniger kontrollierbare Identitäts-Mythen aufgefüllt wird.
