Políticos católicos: ¿fidelidad a Cristo o a la disciplina de partido?

    La Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe publica el día 24 de noviembre de 2002 una «Nota Doctrinal sobre algunas cuestiones relativas al compromiso y la conducta de los católicos en la vida política», firmada por Juan Pablo II tres días antes de su publicación.

    Nos acercamos a la Nota Doctrinal desde los tres aspectos que en ella resaltan. En primer lugar hacemos un análisis sobre la situación que vivimos en nuestras sociedades democráticas, situación en gran parte de confusión. Elementos a tener presentes son: relativismo, laicismo y sus repercusiones.

    En segundo lugar se precisan las «exigencias éticas fundamentales e irrenunciables» ante las que está en juego la esencia del orden moral y el bien integral de la propia persona. Y en tercer lugar se plantea la cuestión de la relación entre fe y vida, centrándose en la dimensión política de la fe.

    Al terminar nuestro estudio constatamos que vivir como cristiano de modo ejemplar y practicar la política son tareas compatibles entre sí. Las virtudes que caracterizan el comportamiento personal del cristiano también influyen a la hora de aceptar o de rechazar distintos proyectos políticos. Es la libertad del cristiano en la vida política la que entraña una responsabilidad personal, que le mantiene en una tensión moral, porque contribuir al bien común es inseparable de la vida cristiana y del anuncio del Evangelio en el mundo.

    The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith published, November 24th 2002, a «Doctrinal note about some aspects concerning the commitment and conduct of Catholics in Political life», signed by John Paul II three days before being published.

    We approach this Doctrinal note from the three highlighted aspects we find in it. In the first place, we analyse the situation we live in our democratic societies, which is in a great part, a situation of confusion. Some of the elements to be taken into account are Relativism, Laicism and their repercussions.

    In the second place we need the «fundamental and inalienable ethical demands» in front of which the essence of moral order and the integral good of the person are at play. In the third place, we pose the relationship between faith and life, focusing the political dimension of faith. Concluding our study, we confirm that living a Christian life in an exemplary way and practising politics are compatible tasks. The virtues that distinguish the personal Christian behaviour have also an influence in accepting or rejecting different political projects. The freedom of a Christian in political life entails a personal responsibility; this responsibility keeps the person in a moral tension, since the contribution to the moral good cannot be separated from Christian life and the announcement of the Gospel to the World.
