In a private letter to three young ladies the Jesuit priest and poet Friedrich Spee relates a murder story, which in a second letter he declares to be a parable. By doing this, he causes a calculated shock in order to demonstrate the importance of a rational choice of religion. Although he does not discuss the truth of specific denominations, the rhetoric of the letter suggests that the protestant addressees are in great danger to loose their eternal lives.
