This paper explores an extensive range of statistics for the estimation of in-control standard deviation and designs a control chart for real-time process monitoring through determination of the control limit factors. The performance of the control chart is assessed for both contaminated and uncontaminated estimation data. A robust evaluation method is proposed based on the mean absolute deviation from the median combined with a simple screening method. This approach performs better than both traditional methods and other robust proposals if the estimation data is contaminated.
