Sedi e succursali bancarie in Ticino: tendenze e mutamenti strutturali fra Lugano e altri centri decisionali

    The changes that bank head offices and branches have undergone in the Ticino over the years, with alternating periods of growth, restructuring and downsizing, can help us understand how the banking industry of the canton of Ticino came to acquire some of its distinctive characteristics. The financial centre of Lugano was born during the period of strong growth in the second half of the twentieth century, driven by capital inflows from Italy, and established itself as a key player on the national stage. However, the very forces that drove its growth, attracting Switzerland’s big banks and foreign banks, contributed to a shift in the locus of decision-making power away from the canton. Consequently, the financial centre of Lugano found itself depending on financial centres elsewhere in Switzerland and abroad. This situation, which has developed over time, has its roots back in the early twentieth century, when the industry found itself in the midst of a transformation. If we compare the situation of Geneva, we can begin to understand how a financial centre can grow but still lag behind nationally. The article examines in detail the changes that have occurred as a result of new banks establishing themselves in the Ticino and, in some cases, then closing

    L’evoluzione lungo un ampio periodo di tempo delle sedi e delle succursali bancarie in Ticino, marcata dall’alternanza di fasi d’incremento con periodi di ristrutturazioni e di ridimensionamenti, permette di comprendere l’emergere di talune caratteristiche proprie al settore bancario ticinese. Il centro finanziario di Lugano, emerso durante la forte espansione nella seconda metà del Novecento trainata dall’arrivo di capitali italiani, ha del resto potuto evidenziarsi sul piano nazionale. Tuttavia, proprio le forze trainanti di questo sviluppo, attraendo le grandi banche svizzere e gli istituti esteri, ha contribuito ad uno spostamento del potere decisionale, al di fuori dei confini cantonali. Il centro ticinese si è così trovato in una posizione di dipendenza dai centri nazionali e anche da quelli esteri. Questa situazione, sviluppatasi nel tempo, trova origini all’inizio del secolo scorso durante una fase di trasformazione del settore. Un breve confronto con il caso di Ginevra permette di trarre alcune osservazioni utili alla comprensione di un centro finanziario che pur sviluppandosi rimane, sul piano nazionale, in posizione arretrata. L’articolo affronta in dettaglio le variazioni avvenute attraverso il sorgere in Ticino di nuovi istituti bancari e la loro, in parte, scomparsa
