    En varios de sus ensayos más importantes, Octavio Paz ha reflexionado sobre el significado histórico del mundo colonial mesoamericano. Paz estima que su estudio aún no atraído como debiera la atención de los especialistas, y lamenta que durante mucho tiempo la cultura del antiguo Virreinato de Nueva España haya sido, en general, menospreciada. Después de repasar brevemente, desde la perspectiva paciana, las características de la sociedad colonial novohispana, se relacionan las ideas de Paz con su propia concepción del trabajo intelectual en América Latina. Se hace hincapié en la relevancia de la herencia novohispana para otro tema paciano fundamental: el de la relación entre tradición y modernidad, tanto en el contexto mexicano como en el latinoamericano.

    In many of his most important essays, Octavio Paz has reflected on the historical meaning of the Mesoamerican colonial world. Paz believes that the study of such world hasn’t attracted yet the attention it deserves from the specialists. He also regrets that the culture of the old Viceroyalty of New Spain has been, in general, underestimated. After briefly reviewing the main characteristics of the colonial society, the importance of Paz’s opinions about this society will be related to his critical conception of the intellectual work in Latin America. Also, a special emphasis is put on the relevance of the New Hispanic heritage for another fundamental Pacian topic of interest: the relationship between tradition and modernity, in the Mexican as well as in the Latin-American context.
