  • Resumen
    • The EIA's updated shale oil and shale gas resource estimate map highlights areas of interest across Europe, Russia and Australia. [Aloulou Fawzi] also noted that despite recently published comments to the contrary, significant potential also exists in China, which ranks third in terms of technically recoverable shale oil resources and top of the chart for technically recoverable shale gas resources, with more than 1.1 trillion cubic feet.

John Newcaster, vice president of logistics and distribution at oilfield service provider Baker Hughes explained that spikes in the price of barite, potash and silica sand (frac sand) over the last seven years have caused key buyers of raw materials - drilling fluid manufacturers such as Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger and Weatherford - to take a hit of up to $160m in one year.

According to IPS, silicosis remains a serious issue for those working with silica sand particles of <10 microns as these can penetrate the upper respiratory system. These compare with particles of <40 microns, which can be seen with the naked eye. Yet while this remains a key issue for silica sand companies to consider, the risk of silicosis has been dramatically reduced since its peak in the 1970s by effective management.
