Australia's technically recoverable shale oil reserves are also large, the EIA's latest report notes, placing the country at sixth in the world with 18bn barrels of technically recoverable shale oil resources.
He added: "We won't see a shale gas boom here as we have in North America. It will be more modest growth, but what might really push it along is the oil associated with the gas. Things will move very quickly if they find oil amongst the shale gas here, because Australia doesn't have much oil. But we just don't know what's down there yet." Chevron's interest in Australia's natural gas follows PetroChina's recently-announced deal with ConocoPhillips to explore unconventional gas reserves in Western Australia.
