  • The work of the writer Joan Sales (Barcelona, 1912-1983) offers a complex, truthful and largely unknown view of the Civil War. It is not a hegemonic story, nor is it transmitted to other generations. It condemns dogmatism and ideologies, as it explains how Catalonia was trapped by the lies of “the red and the black,” by fascism and anarchism. Sales used reality and fiction to give his unique witness to the War. Thus, he wrote the novel Uncertain Glory when unable to publish —due to fascist censorship— ‘Letters to Màrius Torres’, an epistolary account of the well-known Catalan poet. So the two books, between reality and fiction, illuminate a trapped memory, the memory of the trapped
