    La profesión docente en la escuela primariaha sido considerada como un oficio al quese dedican exclusivamente las mujeres. Elorigen de esta idea tiene un carácter histórico,y es asociado a la maternidad como destinoineludible para la mujer. Se planteó comoobjetivo conocer el significado del rol demaestra y de la experiencia docente en ungrupo de profesoras, de un colegio religiosoprivado de la ciudad de Caracas. Se utilizaronentrevistas en profundidad. Los testimoniosfueron analizados a través del método delas comparaciones constantes. Las respuestasestuvieron orientadas hacia las satisfaccionesque brinda esta profesión a pesar del bajosalario. Se manifiesta un continuo entreel rol de madre y de maestra.

    Primary teaching has been regarded as a profession destined exclusively for women.

    This idea has historical origins, and is associated with motherhood as an inevitable future for women. This study aims to understand the meaning of the teacher’s role and experience among a group of teachers, in the context of a private, religious school in Caracas. To collect information, qualitative interviews were used. The resulting texts were analyzed using the constant-comparison method. The responses showed the participants’ satisfaction with their profession despite low salaries, because of the opportunity offered to help and guide those in need..

    Thus a continuum can be found between the roles of mother and teacher
