Appraisal Theory constitutes a valuable theoretical and analytic tool in the study of evaluation in language which allows semantic-discursive studies from an integrative perspective of the functional and the heteroglossic. This study adopts this approach to explore the system of engagement focussing upon the data provided by hard news stories in British national newspapers. The system of engagement as one of the three main components of the evaluative system in language has to do with the linguistic resources that can be used to position the voice of the speaker or author in connection with the statements communicated by a text. In this context, the study aims to highlight how texts are constructed, not only to persuade explicitly, but also to influence in a more indirect way and make it seem natural attitudes, beliefs and assumptions
