    The Five Star Movement (FSM) is the most significant innovation of Italian politics in the last years. Its sudden electoral success and its peculiar origin and organization have few parallels also in comparative perspective. In this article we present the main aspects of this party. We start from a short biography of its founder and charismatic leader, the comedian Beppe Grillo, from TV shows to the theaters, to the blog that launched him as a political character. Then we describe the main organizational features of the FSM, the ideological positioning of its electorate, the electoral fortunes of the party at national, sub-national and European level and its accomplishments (or, better, lack thereof) in representative institutions. Here, the FSM opted for maintaining a distinctiveness vis-à-vis the parties of the « establishment », even if this has brought to insignificant policy influence.

    Le Mouvement 5 Etoiles (M5S en italien) constitue l’innovation la plus significative de la politique italienne ces dernières années. Son succès électoral soudain et ses origines et modalités d’organisation particulières ne rencontrent guère de parallèles en perspective comparée. Dans cet article, nous présentons les principaux aspects de ce parti en commençant par une brève biographie de son fondateur et leader charismatique, le comédien Beppe Grillo, depuis les shows télévisés jusqu’aux salles de spectacle et au blog qui l’a lancé comme personnalité politique. Nous décrivons ensuite les principaux traits organisationnels du M5S, le positionnement idéologique de son électorat, les fortunes électorales du parti aux niveaux national, infranational et européen et ce qu’il été en mesure de réaliser ou non dans les institutions représentations. Ici, le M5S a opté pour le maintien de son caractère distinct vis-à-vis des partis de l’establishment, même si cela l’a conduit à une influence négligeable en termes de politiques publiques.
