La masculinidad es una construcción social del sujeto varón en constante transformación. Lo que se pone en juego en tal construcción son las premisas simbólicas que sustentan la práctica social, las relaciones que establece el sujeto consigo mismo y con otros sujetos individuales y colectivos. Este proceso estructurado socialmente también se ve modelado por la acción del sujeto individual. Con el propósito de mostrar el devenir de la construcción de la masculinidad, el autor utiliza un acercamiento interdisciplinario que involucra a la etnografía, la sociosemiótica y la perspectiva de género. Se presenta el análisis del discurso a partir de la autorrepresentación que un varón hace sobre sí mismo y de las relaciones sociales que establece en su entorno familiar y social más amplio. Múltiples actores participan e influyen, en distinto grado, en la forma como se va configurando la masculinidad del sujeto. Éste hace un balance de las diferentes opciones que se le presentan en su contexto sociocultural. Adopta y adapta una forma de construirse como sujeto de masculinidad, aquella que considera la más apropiada por el reconocimiento social que puede lograr. El universo simbólico sobre el género, en particular sobre la masculinidad, es apropiado por el varón y así fundamenta su práctica social.

Masculinity is a social construction of the male subject in constant transformation. What is at stake in this construction is the symbolic premises that support the social practice, the relationships established by the subject with himself and with other individual and collective actors. This socially structured process is also modified by the actions of the individual subject.With the aim of showing how the construction of masculinity comes into being, the author uses an interdisciplinary approach that includes ethnography, socio-semiotics and the gender perspective. An analysis of the discourse is presented from the self-representation of a male and the social relationships he establishes with his family and wider social spheres. Multiple actors participate and have an impact on —to different degrees— the way in which the subject's masculinity is formed. He makes a balance of the different options presented in his socio-cultural context. He adopts and adapts a way of constructing himself as a masculine subject, the one he believes is the most adequate for the social recognition that could be achieved. Man appropriates the symbolic universe about gender, especially concerning masculinity, and thus establishes his social practice.
