  • The Birthday Party Patterns problem incorporates mathematical representations, patterns, and sense making to foster students’ algebraic reasoning. Teresa Hoppe is a second-grade teacher at Fort Worth Country Day in Fort Worth, Texas. Hoppe implemented the Birthday Party Pattern problem with a group of nine second graders with whom she worked weekly on problem solving and extensions of the mathematics being studied in class.
