Resumen de Colonia Cornelia Veneria Pompeianorum, ovvero l'esperimento dell'oligarchia

Fabrizio Pesando

  • The change in legal status of Pompeii from a federated city in a Roman colony of veterans is illustrated both by the end of the use of the Oscan language for every official act, either by the destruction or the replacement of ancient Samnitic buildings associated with the military training during the political autonomy. It is the case of the seat of the Vereia institution (the so-called Palestra Sannitica) and of other buildings constructed in the Triangular Forum during the second half of II century B.C. In addition, the few but extremely significant buildings renewed or constructed in the early decades of the colony show not only the will of a general renovation of the still existing monuments, but also the desire to suggest a new idea of the city, that reflected the propagandistic requirements of the oligarchic party. Even more traumatic was the impact of colonization on the old estates, which were confiscated and divided, sometimes erasing the very memory of the previous owners. The defeat of the oligarchy interrupted this process, that was followed by a selective recovery of ancient buildings, that were integrated within the new imperial Pompeii.
