This article delineates the main trends of the modern Uruguayan theatre, from the extraordinary success of Florencio Sánchez in the first decades of the twentieth century to the updating of the stage in the last years. In the second part I highlight the unquestionable quality of El huésped vacío (1977), a play by Ricardo Prieto belonging to the Theater of the Absurd.
