  • Resumen
    • The social, economic and technological innovations that characterise the city of the future will be decided based on one main objective: the improvement of the quality of life of mankind and the minimisation of its impact on the environment.

Modern building techniques in Europe are characterized by a high and innovative dynamics related to the new materials and products marketed. New problems are generated by the application of new products, or the application of old products in new conditions, and by the "contamination" of traditional practice and new technologies sometime imported from other industrial sectors.

Apart of these problems, that traditionally make complex quality control of the construction process, today we have to deal with new emergencies related to the negative influences of the built environment on the climate of urban centres that involves energy consumption, thermal discomfort, health risks and obviously pollution.

A true cultural development of the professional structure is crucial, with respect to the skills required by the dynamic progress of new technologies and to the complex design principles following up the new requirements of sustainable development, heavily affecting the building sector.

The world of construction and architecture, nevertheless, is characterised by differing complexity when compared to other industrial processes. The process is strongly fragmented into a variety of independent operators who simultaneously work in the production process.

New challenges and criticality results from new emergencies derived from the urbanisation trend all over the world. In particular the phenomenon of "heat island" is becoming a critical condition related to cities expansion.

In conclusion new environmental emergencies requires improved professional know-how in the sectors of building physics, chemistry, climatology and obviously technology, and of economic, managing, and quality-control issues.

Today particular attention is paid to the study of environmental performance and evaluation of the built environment at an urban scale: on this CIB TG43 -- Megacities has organized in the past international interesting conferences.

Environmental impact of architectural and urban design could be a new and important research area also for pathologist.
