Pietro Selvatico Estense and Camillo Boito may be considered among the leading protagonists of the Italian Medieval Revival. The former was a teacher and the latter his pupil. Working in Padua and Venice from 1840 to 1890, they were fundamental in putting a series of architectural principles into practice. By bridging past and present, historical investigation and architectural design, first Selvatico then Boito laid out the groundwork for a new style based on their interpretation of the local Middle Ages. Boito in particular later had the opportunity to put his ideas into practice in a series of remarkable projects for schools, museums, residential and commercial buildings.
