Metal markets to aid refractory grade chromite

  • An important source of chromite deposits in Kazakhstan is the Kempirsai Massif, part of the southern Urals in north-west Kazakhstan, which is one of the largest sources of podiform deposits in the world. The Kazakhstan state register lists 23 chromite deposits, with almost all industrial reserves owned by two companies, Eurasian Natural Resources Corp. (ENRC) and Oriel Resources Ltd, a subsidiary of Russian company Mechel.

    ENRC is the leading producer, with around 3.6m tonnes chromite output in 2010. Mining is carried out at nine deposits owned by Kazchrome and one by Voskhod - Oriel. In total, the country produced around 8.5m tonnes of chromium ore in 2010, and this is expected to increase in the coming years.

    India is another major producer of chromite and, according to a recent Indian Bureau of Mines report, has chromite reserves of 54m tonnes, as well as 149m tonnes of remaining resources. The majority of these resources - an estimated 93% - are located in Orissa, mostly in the Sukinda valley in Cuttack and Jaipur districts. Minor deposits are scattered over Manipur, Nagaland, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
