Resumen de Better batteries hope to douse fire of li-ion criticism

Laura Syrett

  • Recent incidents involving the troubled Boeing Dreamliner aircraft, grounded worldwide for four months earlier this year over problems with its rechargeable li-ion batteries, followed in October by the viral Youtube video of a much-vaunted Tesla Model S electric vehicle (EV) in flames in Seattle, have not helped the batteries' public relations or these companies' share prices.

"Aqueous batteries can solve some disadvantages associated with the commercial, solid-state and nonaqueous electrolyte-based batteries," Dr Yu Zhao and Dr Hye Ryung Byon, who led research into water-based lithium-iodine (li-I 2 ) battery designs at Japan's RIKEN, told IM earlier this year.

More positively, Japan's Panasonic Corp., one of the battery makers that supplies Tesla amongst other EV producers, has announced that it intends to significantly expand its li-ion capacity over the next year to meet growing demand for the batteries.
