"It is no surprise the ceramics industry has some of the highest operational manufacturing costs, which can be attributed to running multiple kilns at high temperatures," Nor-man Laliberte, engineering manager at Saint-Gobain's High-Performance Refractories (HPR) plant in Worcester, Massachusetts, US, told IM.
"We maintained our focus on increasing prices amid a slower rise in raw material and energy costs, and also continued to roll out our cost cutting programme," said Pierre-Andre de Chalendar, Saint-Gobain's CEO, on announcing the company's Q3 results.
Laliberte said that the switch has led to a notable reduction in the HPR's energy costs, although he declined to give a figure, saying only that the decision to switch offered an "acceptable payback" on Saint-Gobain's initial capital investment and that the savings incurred "will enable us to invest more in our workforce in order for us to remain competitive in the marketplace".
