    The German emigrant Gottfried Semper conceived his theory of elemental building, having been impressed and inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851, in London. At the same time, Adalbert Stifter’s Abdias, a novel of exile set in Bohemia, was published in London (1850-51). Both were working out aesthetics in accord with the same cultural narrative which conceived of the combination of natural elements, fabric and earth, as valuable and productive but also volatile and subject to decay

    Im Schatten der Londoner Weltausstellung von 1851 entwickelt der deutsche Emigrant Gottfried Semper seine Lehre vom elementaren Bauen. Unabhängig davon erscheinen in London 1850/51 mehrere Übersetzungen von Adalbert Stifters Exilgeschichte Abdias aus der böhmischen Provinz. Gemeinsam ist beiden dasselbe kulturpoetische Narrativ: Es erzählt davon, wie produktiv, aber auch wie prekär die Verbindung elementarer Stoffe und Erdmassen ist.
