Introduction: There are few studies evaluating the effectiveness of weekly supply of epoetin alfa. The overall objective was to identify the effectiveness of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin (BIOYETIN®) subcutaneously at weekly interval to increase and maintain adequate hemoglobin and hematocrit in patients peritoneal dialysis incidents values.
Material and Methods: Prospective, observational, comparative, and open study included 100 patients, 50 in control group (GC) and 50 of treated group (GT); >18 years and <1 year stay in Peritoneal Dialysis; they are excluded with acute and chronic inflammatory and infectious processes, evidence of bleeding, transfusion, blood detachment treatment and >140/100mmHg hypertension. The conventional GC receives comprehensive treatment, the GT ERH is added, every 4 weeks the values of blood pressure, hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum albumin, total cholesterol and triglycerides was recorded; every 12 weeks calcium, phosphorus and iron serum; and PTH on admission and year. The data processing was performed with SPSS difference ratios V.2 program, with p<0.05 for significance.
Results: 23 women (46%) and 27 men (54%), the causes of CRF were diabetic nephropathy 23 patients (46%), hypertensive nephropathy 14 (28%), chronic glomerulonephritis 8 (16%), nephropathy tubulointerstitial 5 (10%); average age 59.2 years (rng: 21-76) p= ns; 67.4 kg body weight (rng: 56-79) p=ns; ERH 6,700 IU/wk (rng: 4,000- 8,000); basal and final Hb 9.1 g/dL and 11.7; hematocrit 27.4% y 35.
Conclusions: ERH weekly supply of alpha was effective in increasing hemoglobin and hematocrit in patients peritoneal dialysis incidents.
